Hi, New to chickens and have questions

Hi, we live in Missouri and have four 3-week-old Buff Orpington chicks. They are starting to get too big to be inside, but our weather is still in the 30s and below. We are hoping to get them into the chicken coop by the second week of March. Will they be too young? How do we keep them warm enough? Any advice is welcomed, thanks!

By the second week of March, your chicks will be about six weeks old. At that age, they should be almost fully feathered and able to withstand temperatures down to about 50 degrees F., at least in my experience. If your weather is still really cold, that means you'll have to supply your chicks with some extra heat in their coop or keep them inside a little longer (probably not preferable).

If there is a way to route electricity safely out to your coop, then a heat lamp, electric chick brooder, or even a heating pad should help your chicks stay warm. There is always some risk of fire with heating elements and chicken coops, but as long as you try to keep the heat lamp/other heater out of the shavings (by securely hanging it, etc.) and make sure the wiring is not faulty, everything should be fine.

Glad you could join the flock! Great advice there for you from Bantam lover, I too am in the same situation having chicks and it still being a little nippy. I moved mine out to the garage with a heat lamp at 2 weeks of age and they have been fine.
