We inherited my cousins setup when he moved to a place with a pretty terrible sounding HOA. Oh well! That was about a month ago. We love our 6 hens and they give us 4-5 eggs a day. I still don't know what breed they are. They follow me around. I pet them. I make quiche. It's lovely.
We had a fox come by yesterday and tear some tail feathers off one of my ladies. She's OK though. Broad daylight.
We also have an old border collie mix and a young smooth collie, about 9 months old - pretty well full grown. We have kept them on the porch when the ladies are out on the town. But when I saw the fox I let them out to chase him off. I was surprised when they didn't hurt my hens and were easy to call back. They must be getting used to them.
Tonight, the collie puppy even helped me herd them into the coop! No training just instinct! We were amazed. He got 4 in, then circled back for the other two. Like it was nothing.
My question is: can certain dogs (obviously not just any dog) be trusted to roam around with them and keep the foxes away? Or is that an even bigger risk? Is that done?
