We inherited my cousins setup when he moved to a place with a pretty terrible sounding HOA. Oh well! That was about a month ago. We love our 6 hens and they give us 4-5 eggs a day. I still don't know what breed they are. They follow me around. I pet them. I make quiche. It's lovely.

We had a fox come by yesterday and tear some tail feathers off one of my ladies. She's OK though. Broad daylight.

We also have an old border collie mix and a young smooth collie, about 9 months old - pretty well full grown. We have kept them on the porch when the ladies are out on the town. But when I saw the fox I let them out to chase him off. I was surprised when they didn't hurt my hens and were easy to call back. They must be getting used to them.

Tonight, the collie puppy even helped me herd them into the coop! No training just instinct! We were amazed. He got 4 in, then circled back for the other two. Like it was nothing.

My question is: can certain dogs (obviously not just any dog) be trusted to roam around with them and keep the foxes away? Or is that an even bigger risk? Is that done?

Yes, some dogs are just naturals most are not. Sounds good with your dogs but, I think you should let them have supervised visits with the chickens until you are as sure as possible that they have a benign attitude towards them..

! Pleased you joined us! I think some breeds have the guarding disposition, others not so much. Some in BYC are very anti-dog around their chickens - seeing them as a potential predator. I just know that my dogs have never hurt my flock (they ignore them) and have chased off and even killed some predators. Good luck to you!

I would trust my poor old dog with any chicken.
But, he's a good dog. Lab.

He did kill one duck, but in truth, the duck wouldn't
leave the dog alone. Kept bothering the dog. So I
always that as the ducks own fault.

But glad you're with us anyway. Don't be a stranger.
