I have a 34 week old Barnevelder who I noticed a few days ago had feces stuck to her hind feathers. Then over the last few days I noted she was less active than her flock mates and she certainly has not been laying. She is also been hesitant to eat.

I am still going to do a fecal float to check for worms but last night I decided to check her crop and it was soft and not impacted. However, this morning I checked again and it was roughly the same size. I smelled around her beak and noted nothing unusual, but I understand that the smell doesn't necessarily show up right away.

Can anything else cause the crop not to empty? I am planning on picking up some miconazole (Monistat) and doing the 7 day treatment.

Is there anything else I should be looking for? I have read this article and several pages of comments, but wanted to be sure I'm not missing anything: https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...w-to-know-which-one-youre-dealing-with.73607/

Thanks!

You can give her some epsom salt water to help her pass what might be causing a blockage. Has she molted this year? Hens normally stop laying right before they molt. Molting will also make there apatite slow down.

Actually she just died a few minutes ago. If I had to guess, and I did not mention it in the OP, I have Mareks in my flocks. It wiped out all of the birds in one of my flocks, and I think it has now claimed two of my older pullets, this being one of them.

I was hoping it was not Mareks as the flock it killed was younger, but with the passing of an older CCL last week and now this one, it seems I have a pretty nasty strain.

I sent the CCL off for a necroscopy last week and it came back with what I believe to be signs of the visceral form. My guess with this one passing she is the same.

I am going to send this one for testing too but I can only guess it will show mareks.
