I currently have no chickens, but 2 horses, 2 dogs, 4 parrots and 3 fish tanks. I am trying to get up the nerve to suggest a few pet chickens to my husband, but not sure what reaction I'll get, lol.
I am interested in bantams. Bantam Rock Barred, Silkies, Cochins, etc. I would probably only have 5 or 6 at the most. Just as pets, and am thinking of buying a chicken run. (I already have a rabbit hutch to use as a coop). I live in the high desert of S. California, where summers get over 100 degrees at times, and winters can get down to 15F. I will have a mister for summer. Seramas intrique me too, but since they are not as cold hardy, I could keep a couple in our parrot room, which has its own heat and air. I have a big cage in there --4x4, plus the parrots are let out of their cages for 2 hours daily, when the chicken could run around. Its big room--30x12, with a smaller sun room as well.
I'd love to hear from anyone who has bantams, and which are their favorites, pros and cons too, as I would really like a breed that is super friendly and not skittish. I've done some research, but not nearly enough yet! I'm so happy to have found this forum!
