Hello everyone, I'm just starting out my first flock. I have 14 eggs in the incubator that go into lockdown Thursday. I just got 3 white silkies that are just about a week old and though I've heard that they are next to impossible to sex until they are mature, I swear two of them are roos. They stand up really tall, and are super loud compared to the third one. The two I think are roos hate being held, while the other let's me hold it. Has anyone guessed this early on and been right?

It certainly sounds like you could have two Silkie roos.
I've noticed that my roo chicks will stand taller and HATE being held.
They also scream louder.
Let us know what they turn out to be!

But yes, they are really loud at times, especially if I take one of the chicks out. Is there a way to mark them so I can tell them apart? I've thought about using a tiny bit of nail polish on one nail but don't want to make them sick.

Welcome to BYC! In my experience with Silkies, the cockerels have a rounded raised walnut shaped comb and the pullets have a flat, long comb. Yours are too young right now to be sexed. Best of luck to you!

You can use colored zip ties on their legs to mark them.
As the chick grows, cut the old zip tie off and put another one on.

Hello and Welcome To BYC! Cute chicks! X2 colored zip ties will work to mark them. Since you do have white ones you could also just magic marker a colored spot on them, some chicks really do seem to scream they are roos from the beginning.

You have three beautiful silkies. In many breeds the young cockerels are the most out going and friendly - people fall in love with them hoping they are girls,and they respond by becoming full, fledged roosters.
