Hi all,

I've been following BYC for several months, looking up specific questions and I decided I needed to join this helpful group. We have a small farm in Maryland. YEARS ago we had a few chickens in the horse barn, but the local fox got them all after a few years. We decided we weren't doing chickens again until we could set up a proper chicken house. Well that was this summer. We now have a highly diversified flock of 42 chickens.

I do have a new question, but I'll post that separately from this introduction.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. A lot of us were lurkers before joining. :eek:) I'm sorry about your losses to the fox. It's always sad to lose some of our flock. We know what predators we have.

We live in Maryland hunt country so there are fox. They're pretty dealable however. They attack things in the same way dogs do. We also have raccoons and they are more of a problem, however living on a farm we have more options for pest management in addition to the fenced outdoor pen. (The fencing goes to the roof line so no climbing over and the pen "floor" is a concrete pad that we cover with woodchips.

We plan on letting them free range during the day and yes, we have redtail hawks so that's always a risk to.

The house is fully framed and bolted to the concrete pad with enclosed ceiling, so I think we're good on snakes in the house too.

We'll see how this goes. :)
