all of my local feed stores are into like, game roosters and such... so they recommended me to feed them stuff like, chaves mix, cuido mix, high octane and stuff... so i found this one mix called junior mix... it's like 38% protein... srsly, it's crazy... but they told me that it's better for the chickens... well, i dunno... so far i've been giving them a junior mix/chicken scratch mix... but now i'm thinking about getting some lay pellets... but i dunno yet...

i'm not into eating the eggs... i just want the chickens to look their best, be healthy, and lay fertile eggs... i have OEGB's... is this food bad for them...?

i googled for an hour already using different terms like, gamecock feed, high octane feed, chaves mix, nothing... i can't find anything useful... i will see if i still have the label of the food somewhere and post the ingredients and everything up here... but still... what would be a better food...? i do NOT fight them... i just had to put that up on there... it seems that everyone around here is into fighting roosters... i dunno if they fight theirs, but mine are bantams and they're cute and stuff... LOL... so what should i do..? change the food all together...? or feed them a junior/pellet mix...? and what should i look for in a food... i know there are hundreds of threads, but if you feel like answering my questions that would rock... tee hee...

thanks in advance...

You can supplement and keep the food you have them on. There are lots of different natural foods high in protein, like nuts, and meat scraps. Mine get "treats" like that often. I don't raise gamebirds, but other poultry enjoys high protein too. You could also grow and feed mealworms for protein, crickets, about any bug. The high protein feeds are expensive! Go natural high protein snacks instead. The bagged crap is probably just meat scrap they put in to raise the protein anyway..or soy

If you want healthier birds...natural feeds.

I hear that a cat food is a good protein option. Often I'll take some of the dry (they dont' like the wet kind) and add water til it moistens up. Then I add a handful of flax seeds and some cracked corn. They love it!

High protein also keeps them fuller, longer, just like with people on low carb diets.

Hi
Check the ingredients. What's in chaves mix, cuido mix?

i dunno, but i see like little black pellets... my friend said that that must be meats and such... but i also see peas, red lentils, brown lentils... um.. man... all kinds of weird seeds and such... let me text my boy and see if he still has the ingredients list...

edit: also, the cuido mix was super expensive... they said that they give that one to a game cock before a show or fight... i think it has a bunch of vitamins to give them energy... only two feed stores have this mix... there's also one called ninja mix... LOL... yeah i know... i live in the ghetto...

oh and btw... i do feed insects to the chickens... i raise worms, roaches and other stuff to feed my reptiles... so they get some too... because they go nuts over it... but if it's too much protein i'll cut back on their treats...

Hi Gumbii, hot in this instance would be high powered/high protien. The term is used in horse feeds alot when they have alot of starchy carbs like corn, that is like adding nitro, and the horse becomes a dragster. (hee Hee).
I also live in the 'hood and there are a gazillion game birds around here for eggs/meat and fighting. I have a pet hen that is from the Lacy Roundhead breeding. Whatta goofbird is she. Shes fun for comic relief.
I get my chicken feed from Whittier Narrows Feed because they sell the seeds separately so you can make your own mix. They also have a "house mix" that is a good one. My birdies are doing well on it. I also give mealworms or some other kind of protien everyday for a treat. Hope this helps ya alittle.

thx froggies...

well, i think i'm going to cut this down with some lay pelets... i dunno, i kind of like the fact that they get a variety of grains and stuff...

and that's the only local feed store i have NOT gone too... how weird is that... LOL... i get them from this store called el granero in compton... you can't beat the price on dry goods... 50lbs of this junior mix for 15 bucks... and they will mil it for another fifty cents... i'll get some lay pallets tomorrow from them too... they're cheap...

since you make your own feed, i want to send you a PM...
