Hi !
Happy to have found this forum. I am looking for information on raising meat birds.
We got chickens last year as we wanted fresh eggs. My dad's family used to have a farm and I used to play with chickens as a child.
I had plans to have them as pets. From last year's flock 12 survived, we had a couple of chick deaths, one heart attack and one just vanished.
We have 2 silkie roosters that are very mellow, 3 silkie hens, 1 Red island Red, 1 Ancona, 1 silver egger, 4 easter eggers. They are very friendly and crack me up.
I travel for work 100% of the time so my ex husband and my daughter take care of the chickens in my absence. In the past month they slacked picking up eggs and we ended up with chicks! I think it was a missed act because someone seemed quite pleased with this outcome
Fast forward to a week later unfortunately two chicks just disappeared and we are left with one. Yesterday I went to pick up buddies for the last little fellow , as my ex is now interested in raising meat chickens. I could not find cornish cross of the same age, so I picked up dual purpose birds, 2 Red Island Red, 1 Light Brahma, 2 Mystic Marans and 1 Chocolate Orpington. I also brought one mama inside and she happily adopted all of them. She will stay put till we figure out what predator has been kidnapping the chicks. They are so cute. I am afraid we just added more chickens ... that will never end up in the pot
