My husband got me 8 RIR girls for my birthday in April. Well - I found Backyard Chickens, & I was hooked.
I named them all - (not sure if that is a wise thing to do) Then Ava morphed into Burt, but I am very pleased with him anyway.
Yesterday, the day I had been waiting for, arrived. We got the first egg !!! It was outside in their dust pile, but never mind.
Today, I went to have a look, & there was another one there. So, I looked at Backyard Chickens, and followed a thread that said put a fake egg in the nesting box.
I had an old Easter decoration with eggs on, so I dismantled it ... within 5 minutes of me putting an egg in each box, one of the girls scratched the egg out of the way, & went & sat in the nesting box.
I've yet to see if anything happened, but it's looking good so far.

Thank you so much. I couldn't help myself, so I have just been out to check the nesting box.And YES!! There was an egg, 15 minutes after me putting the fake egg in there.
I am beyond pleased.

golf balls make good phoney eggs as well, and egg eaters cannot make a dent in them _ teaches them a lesson.
