So, first and foremost, hello BYC! Ever since I started raising chickens this site has been my go-to for anything chicken related. So it's really great to finally have signed up!

Right now, at our house we currently have 3 grown hens and 4 chicks that are about... Let's say about halfway there to being fully grown. Here are the fully grown ones pictured below:

So the white one is named Elvis and I can't rightly remember the breed name but she has feathers on her feet, so there's that. In the second picture is the big girl, Scarlet. I believe that she's a Australorp(?) or however you spell it. And lastly, we have Houdini who is a Bantam something-or-the-other and also has one funky 'fro. Unfortunately she's camera-shy and it's impossible to get her to look at a camera. I'll have pics of the lil chicks soon.

My question to you, BYC, is why one of my fully grown hens won't lay eggs? Currently, Elvis is producing about an egg a day and Houdini is up to 2 eggs a day(Employee of the Month!). Scarlet, on the other hand, hasn't laid a single egg since we've had her and I'm wondering if any of you folks might have any ideas as to why. Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm not great with breeds but, I think your bantam is polish or possible houdin. I'm probably wrong. When 2 Crows comes on later today she'll know about the black one - I'm pretty certain it is a black Australorp she raises them and loves them. Is there any chance she is a boy? It happens to the best of us.

You can post photos on "what gender or breed is this." BTM

Are you sure that Scarlet and Houdini aren't using the same nest? My birds all use one favorite nest, although there are 6 of them available. They all seem to wait for this nest, sometimes crowding or "hurrying" the other girls up.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Elvis is probably a White Cochin, X3 Scarlett is a Black Australorp if the skin on the bottom of her feet is white/pink, and Houdini is a White Crested Black Polish. X2, sounds like they are all laying. It takes around a day for a hen to produce an egg so for one to lay two eggs in one day is a very very rare occurrence, so if you've gotten three eggs a day more than maybe once then all three of your hens are laying. Hens like to lay in the nest boxes other hens lay in, so it is normal to find more than one egg in a nest box.

Welcome to BYC!

You have a gorgeous flock! I think they all may be laying in the same nest box. Very common for hens to all use the same nest box.

Enjoy your wonderful flock and welcome to ours!
