Thanks for all the replies! I plan to start checking this website every day. I'm still learning everything I can about the chickens we own and chickens in general! My friends and family are taking great pleasure in teasing me about my new obsession and how adoring I am of my chickens! I love them all, except... There is one chicken (he's a wheaten maran) who drives me nuts. He is aggressive, which I haven't ever seen before. I spoil my chickens, so they are generally very tame, will eat out of my hands, etc. He is terrible, though. I've tested different theories to see why he is acting that way (for instance, I wondered if he was being defensive of the food...), but his behavior is consistent no matter what I do. Even if I am quickly leaving his coop (that he shares with two other marans), he will chase me and bite me on the back of my legs. He doesn't just have bravado; he bites-- and hard! So, I can't say that I'm too fond of him. I've tried... I'm fine with the marans not being the cuddly type, but I am assuming that King Arthur (that's his name, but he is definitely not as gentle as his namesake) is the anomalie. My favorite chicken by far, in case anyone is wondering (yeah, right!), is our gray silkie named Myrtle. I think Silkies are supposed to have black skin beneath all that "fur", but her skin is pink. She is the sweetest thing and will sit on ANYTHING. If an egg or even a just-born baby needs attention, she's the one who takes over. Okay, I really must get back to doing work. I work online, which means that this website could become a dangerous distractor from my work!
I just realized that I already talked at length about King Arthur. I suppose it's that much more obvious that he is bothering me! Haha. We should have five baby black bantam cochins in about two weeks! We'll see how it goes...
Hi from middle Georgia. My coop is half built. My chicks will be delivered mid April so im in the waiting stage. Your chicks sound adorable. Hope they all do well for you.
