HI there from San Diego new member!

We have all of those in our city! Yes much to dangerous to let them free roam! I was told that certain breeds of dogs will protect chickens and keep the hawks at bay simply by their presence. I have a herding dog that does get along with the chickens, the dog does not stay outside all the time though so he could not protect them all the time. Was thinking to clip the chickens wing feather to prevent them from leaving the yard and let them out WITH the dog to watch them at least a couple hours a day. My idea is if we take these animals out of their natural habitat where they are able to take care of their own needs, then we need to provide them everything they could possibly need.
Even though my chickens have a dirt floor in their run, I didn't know that they needed sand to roll in,it's dirt not sand! I got that info here and am going out to buy a littler box and sand:-) What a great group!! Thanks everyone for your help!
