Hi all,

I found this site today while mourning my just buried Pekin Duck 'Booth'

His passing was terrible as it was my fault and i feel so bad :(

A bit about me before I go into that,

My name is Kylie, Im married with 3 boys, aged 8 ,11 and 13

I have a facination with animals, always have to have 1 or 20 LOL, people always comment on my house being a farm or a zoo,

in the past few years i had 20 odd budgies, 2 guinea pigs, dog, 4 cats, 2 love birds, 4 chickens, then another chicken, 2 pekin ducks, dwarf lop ear rabbit

have lost a fair few budgies, my dog past a couple of years ago of illness and had to be put down, guinea pigs died one at the mouth of my dog, the other im not sure,, the mother of my 3 kittens got ran over, one love bird escaped one chicken died of illness, the other 3 were taken in the night by what im sure was a fox, ( then adopted a friends chicken) and today my male Pekin died

all of this was in the last say 3-4 yrs,,, tho it sounds worse all in one sentence like that. my last purchase was my rabbit, her name is 50 shades,,, as she is multiple colours of gray LOL

And heres my horrific story of my ducks passing,, im in SA and we recently went thru one of the worse heat waves in decades, well I took my ducks water bowl and filled it to put into my lovebirds cage for her to maybe bathe in, then found a 10ltr square type bucket and placed it under water leaking down from my budgies water mist sprayer to fill while we all swam in our pool. when we turned sprayer off we already had half a bucket full, I just left as i dashed back to swimming pool,,, ( my ducks also have a pond by the way)
We had a visitor and we were talking about me putting bowl in parrot cage and wondered if it was too deep for parrot, and i said i'd tip some out later,,,, but it would be ironic for her to survive a week of 40+ degrees only to drown in a water bowl,,, we mustve jinxed ourselves,,,,
as we got sidetracked due to visitors then dinner then i had to dash out to see a friend, I forgot about the 10ltr bucket for ducks being only half full, (and parrot bowl)
This morning my hubby hears our chicken acting weird, he goes to see and my oldest son found Booth my drake, upside down dead in the bucket :(

He had to dive in to get some water only to find he couldnt get out,,, what suprises me is that the bucket didnt tip when he put his weight on the side to get in... I feel terrible :(

let this be a warning to people with ducks n chickens dont use deep buckets

My hubby dug a hole down the side of the house with our other pet graves, and we had a small funeral, in which i proceeded to blubber like a baby,,,,

Please forgive me Booth ,,, and please forgive me backyard chicken community i feel so bad :( I hope you still accept me as a member

cheers n sadness Kylie - RIP Booth

Hi and sorry about your duck. I just joined today also although my sister has been trying to get me to join for a while. I have Cayuga and Swedish ducks and love them so much. It sounds like they're laughing when they quack. Which is every time the lights go on or the back door opens. Thank you for being willing to share that experience. I will check all the containers in the pasture I use for water.

Thanks all,

Yes I really hadnt guessed he may fall in and drown, I really assumed with the size of him it would tip over, my hubby just cut the bucket in half so its not deep, and Booth's partner has just come out of her nest and had a wash, I think she has only just realised booth is missing poor bubba,, maybe she will bond with the chicken now.

Main issue i have now is the ducks were never really tame and never let us get near them unless he was going to bite us or chase us to protect her eggs,,, they were handled alot when babies but then quickly grew out of letting us, Im hoping maybe now we only have her she is just over 2 yrs, she may start to bond with us as she has no male to stick to.

On another note, just realised this site was American, and I wrote SA,,, but I meant South Australia, just incase anyone thougth it was South AFRICA LOL

thanks again bye for now xox

Don't beat yourself up about your duck. Accidents happen. I am sure he had a good life at your farm. But it is great to have you aboard and enjoy BYC!
