In the Brooder
Hi all, just wanted to introduce myself. I have had chickens (for eggs) for a few years now, but I seem to always be learning something new about them. Recently, I had a lice infestation and I googled it and this site came up. I found a lot of really great ideas about treating them and other ideas about caring for chickens, so I decided to sign up and join the conversation.
Right now I have 5 hens and 1 rooster. I adopted 3 of them last year from someone who could no longer care for them. The breeds are a golden-laced wyandotte, a feather-footed brahma, and a lachenvelder. The other two hens, I'm not sure. I can't identify them. They were purchased at a Tractor Supply last year by my mom and you know how they mix all the chickies together. I call them mutts. The rooster is one of the mutts and he's super sweet. One of them seems to be a bantam-something because she's about pigeon sized. I recently purchased 2 pullet chicks that are buff wyandottes, so hopefully there will be a smooth transition. I am slowly rebuilding my flock back up because for the past few years my husband and I lived out of state and left my chickens to my parents, who are not chicken-keepers. They didn't do a very good job, despite our careful planning. I thought we made it super easy for them. We lost a a few and now that we moved back we feel we're in a better place to get more chickens.
I remember I had a Mottled Java hen named Bubby about 4 years ago and I've been searching for some chicks lately. I love that breed; super sweet and great jumpers. I remember I would raise my garden-picked cherry tomatoes over her head and she would jump pretty high to get to it, despite her huge body. It was cute. Sadly, she was taken by a neighbor's dog (we think) and haven't had any since.
We also have geese and ducks. Super messy, but for whatever reason my husband loves them. He's definitely "Team Goose" and I'm "Team Chicken."
Anyway, we live in the desert, so mud is an issue for us. I wish I had all that pretty grass the birdies can roam around in to catch bugs that I see on Pinterest, but alas, I have sand.
Anyway, great to be here and if you made it this far in my post, thanks for reading.
