I have only recently started raising chickens. They are Rhode Island reds and doing great. Just started laying in the heat of Texas.!
Today one of my chickens was down and can hardly hold her head up. She does not have any wounds that I can find. I am afraid she is going to die but from what I do not know from what. She did drink some water

Hi, welcome to BYC!

The heat can really take a toll on chickens, sometimes even killing them. When you see your chickens panting and their wings spread out away from their bodies, they are hot. You'll have to take some extra measures to keep them cool & comfortable. Some of the things we do for our girls are:
* Extra waterers with frozen water bottles in them
* As much shade as possible (natural or man-made)
* Spraying the run down to cool off the ground they walk on
* Give them cooling treats like melon
* Try not to get them too excited in the heat of the day
* Fans to circulate the air (not to blow directly on them)

For the girl that is down, if you suspect heat is her problem, you can give her electrolytes (might have to help her with that) and cool her off with a cool (not cold) water bath. Also, move her to an area by herself so the others don't pick on her. If you need more help, post all her symptoms here:
