Hi there

G’Day from down under SadNeighbor :frow Welcome!

Kudos to you for being concerned about the chickens’ welfare :clap

Thumbs down to your neighbours! :smack

I too am a cat lover and have two indoor fur babies who have an outdoor run which protects both them and the wildlife.

I just wanted to say that as a chicken owner it is my responsibility to keep my chickens on my property and if one of my chickens happen to fall prey while not on my property, that is no-one’s fault but my own, including the cat who may or may not be the reason.

If it was up to my neighbours to worry about the welfare of my chickens, I probably should not have them.

Even if they did just show up on my property uninvited, if I was not able to care for them, I would make alternative arrangements for them and not expect the neighbours to have to do so.

And, if I was not looking after them appropriately and they were annoying the neighbours, I should not be surprised if the neighbours make alternative arrangements for the chickens in the form of relocating them to appropriate accommodations ;)

Climbing down off my soap box ….. :p

AMEN to that!! :goodpost:

Howdy and :welcome:frow Hope your situation improves. May be that your neighbors don't know anything about raising/having chickens, themselves....not inconsiderate, just destitute of knowledge? You getting involved, may spark an interest in their learning. This is a great site for them to learn. Good Luck.

I'll definitely take a look at all the coops. I was glancing at them and it doesn't seem that they need much space? I thought that they'd have to be much larger.

Here's a big problem. This morning I woke up to the chickens being very loud behind our house. Not crowing. Just being very loud. I looked out the window trying to see them and I couldn't but then I saw a hawk. The sounds the chickens made got even louder. It sounded really terrifying. I got out of the house as fast as I could to run around back. I was thinking by the time I got there that one of them would be dead. I get back there and I didn't see them at first but then I saw them huddled behind some bamboo in the corner where the back porch meets the house. The hawk was gone. I don't know if the rooster fended the hawk off, if the hawk gave up from them being behind bamboo, or if it heard me running.

Anyway, I've been waiting for the neighbors to come home to see if they can get them in their garage. I don't know what other action can be done for them right now. I can't let them in my garage cause I got too much stuff stacked haphazardly in there. I'm figuring the neighbors are going to have to do something very soon for them to keep them safe. I kinda wonder if at just the meantime if they could just get one of those plastic dog houses just for the day at least with some straw in there.

The biggest need right away would be secure fencing with a lid. That means they need a run to be in so critters aren't able to call them lunch.

Even a plastic dog house will work for her to lay eggs in and them to sleep in. The fencing is super important if a hawk has found them.

This one would be really easy to throw together.

We have hawks hanging about often. Many of my neighbors also have chickens and there are tons of bunnies. The scream a chicken makes when a hawk is around is hard to ignore.

After catching them home this afternoon and talking to them, I think I may have convinced them to take them with them to Alabama to a person they know who has chickens up there. I can't help but think this would be the best thing for the chickens at this rate because I'm not sure how committed they're going to be. If they don't take them when they go this weekend, I'll keep trying to talk to them about the enclosure ideas I've been shown. If they leave the birds behind, I'll at least put out a storage bin with a couple holes cut in it to see if they can escape into it if need be.

Kind of frustrating when other people make their problems yours.
Hopefully they are no longer thinking the cat is after the chicken.

I have to think that if they don't do something soon they may become a non issue with a hawk around.

My best wishes for a decent resolution.
Heck you can always come by to chat with us chicken folk. You seem like decent folk to me.
