I'm new to an actual account, although I've been browsing/ etc for awhile.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Not horribly new, but not an oldie, either. Daughter and I started volunteering at a rescue farm (abused/neglected/abandoned farm animals) about 3.5 years ago. She's always loved her chickens, and has dragged me kicking and screaming into the hobby.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
On the rescue farm, about 50 ducks/turkeys/chickens. Many males..because those are the ones that get dropped off to us. *laugh*
14 of those chickens, spread across two coops, are owned by my daughter and me.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Let's see.. 5 salmon faverolles (1 cock, 4 pullets), 2 partridge barnvelders (pullets), 2 bantam wyandottes (1 blue cock, 1 black hen), 1 full-sized wyandotte (pullet, silver-laced), 3 black leghorns (1 cockerel, 2 hens), and 1 bantam black leghorn hen.
I also have 1 newly hatched black copper maran, one in the process of hatching (that I don't think will make it), and 3 eggs that I highly doubt are viable. But who knows?
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Last year, from our first forrays into incubating, and searching for information. This year, from frantically searching Google for what to do when opening a long overdue egg this morning revealed a live chick that wasn't ready to hatch yet. It's been about 4 hours, and it's still breathing, though, so I'm still trying to save it.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Reading, crocheting, knitting, a little spinning (from our farm alpacas, although I'm NOT good at it), calligraphy, and homeschooling mom.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
No pets, our apartment doesn't allow them, and my middle son is allergic to.. well.. basically everything that's outside. I have 3 kids (23m, 20m, 15f), and have homeschooled them all. I work in message board administration, mostly for game companies, and have done so since 1998. I like it, because it's a work-from-home gig, and I can set my own hours.
Nice to be here, and thanks for all the great info!
