I just got my first chickens at the end of May. I have four and they're all really cute! There's a light brahma, an ameraucana, and two rhode island reds, who are getting increasingly difficult to tell apart! I'm having a problem though- they don't seem to like me? The brahma goes absolutely nuts anytime I try to pick her up. One of the reds and the ameraucana are a little better, but not much. The other rhode island red is the only one who lets me pick her up without much fuss. Am I doing something wrong?

Hello, thanks for joining us! If you click on the Search Forums link and enter 'taming chickens' that will bring up a lot of posts with information and tips on how to do it. Of course, some chickens never do warm up to people much but it's certainly worth a try to see what happens.

Its built in to chicks not to like being held, it's a predator thing. When you pick them up, try scooping under while coming over top of them. Handle them often too, they will get used to it. Carry them around, being careful of course. I like to lay down an old sheet on the living room floor and get them out daily as babies. They naturally gravitate to your lap, makes them bond with you. But overall, chickens don't like to be touched or held. They DO like to sit on your lap though. Just keep working with them.
