Hello, I am new to the board, looking for a place to learn new things about the chickens. I got 5 new baby chicks on Monday, have read lots of books about them, chicken coop is almost done.

Personally, I have 5 sons and a husband that sometimes makes me feel like I have 6 sons. (He's a wonderful guy, really.) No other pets for now, used to have an Australian Shepherd, but it was his time, so he has moved on to the Rainbow Bridge.

We got the chicks for all the usual reasons I guess, eggs, pest control, built in fertilizer. We have a smallish backyard where they will basically have the run of the yard, and we plan on having an enclosed run as well. The girls are as follows:

Souffle - Australorp
Scramble - Ameraucan (Sorry if I spelled that wrong, I always do.)
Sunny - Australorp
Shell - Ameraucan
Nog - Rhode Island Red

I always told my father that if we ever raised meat birds, they'd be named after the dish they are destined for: Paella, Jambalaya, Rotisserie, Stewie ...
