Hello Everyone,

I've lurked on this board a bit off and on over the last couple of weeks and thought I would join. :)

My husband and I got some Rhode Island Whites a month ago. I'm not sure how old they are - they didn't know when we bought them. But currently they have what I would guess at about 75% of their feathers in, maybe more. We have seven of them and moved them from indoors to a hutch outside with a heat lamp (though we haven't needed it at night for a few nights). We are hoping to get them into a coop/run this weekend or next at the latest.

I'm probably a bit different from a lot of people here in that I really didn't start out with much of an interest in chickens. To be honest, we just want to raise them for eggs as we go through a LOT of eggs. Hubby really doesn't want me to get attached to the chickens at all since we hope to eventually raise them for meat as well.

But I'm finding myself at a crossroads because I want to be attached to them - at least enough to have more of an interest in them. Especially when they will be moved off the porch and it'll be a bit more work to take care of them. I want to WANT to take care of them, do you know what I mean?

Sheesh I hope I don't sound like a horrible person here since I'm not a huge chicken fan.

All of this to say that I want to learn more about them and get more interested in them.

Anyway I hope to get to know some of you and learn from your experience!

Oh, and I have no problem eating my chickens, and being attached. I figure, I take care of them, enjoy them, get a kick out of their silliness, worry when they are ill, and when I can't find one, and I have no problem eating the excess roosters.

Hello and :welcome
Some people raise some chickens as pets and for eggs, and have separate ones that they raise for meat. You could try doing that, so you can still get attached to some of your chickens. :p
Don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have (you can post a picture of your chickens, we can give you an estimate on how old they are :) If they don't need the heat lamp at night anymore, perhaps they are around 5-6 weeks old) and enjoy the site!! :D
