Hi everybody. I've been looking through some of the forums for the past few weeks, but just decided to join today. I recently bought some little chicks, and they are growing so fast!!! I originally thought I would buy 10 or 15...but ended up with 42! How did that happen!?!? Here is what I have...
12 Silver Laced Wyandotte
8 Easter Egger
7 Rhode Island Red
5 Black Australorp
5 Black Sex Link
3 Buff Orpington
2 Barred Rock

When I was younger I had some Barred Rock and Rhode Island Reds, but I have no experience with any of the others. Most of my chicks are about 2 weeks old now, except for 8 of the SLW. I bought them a week sooner than the others. They all get along fine, except for one of the younger wyandottes, and she kept picking at the eyes of the others. I have her separate now, but she seems so lonely. I feel bad for her.

Anyway, I'm glad to be a member here and look forward to "meeting" everyone!

Its called chicken math, the numbers just keep growing. That's why it's best to make a bigger coop, or run than you think you will need.

Hello and welcome from Ohio....so glad you joined BYC

Best of luck to you raising all those little peepers. You are going to have plenty of eggs someday :)

Chicken math! I've heard that before, and how true it is! It doesn't help that I work next to a feed store that sells chicks and I can't help but go over on my lunch hour to see the little fluff balls.

Lets see- for 42 grown standard chickens you will need 168 square feet of coop space - that's a lot!

Welcome to the club from So NH!!!!!!! i hope you enjoy raising the "lil peepers". we have become addicts at my house!!!! what started as " no i dont want them bc i heard they smell" to "OMG i can' live without them" and ever learning. we love our flock and the newest additions! let me know how tha black sex links are. we raised red sexlinks and "adopted" 2 black sex links but had to cull them b/c they were mean. might have been from where they came from. So far my black sex links get along fine with all the others. A few of them seem to be slow getting feathers. They have feathers on their wings, but their backs are somewhat bald. I'm not sure if that's normal for them? All the other chicks have fluff where there are no feathers. They also seem to have a little bit longer necks than the rest. My profile pic is one of my black sex links. She is my favorite chick. I took that picture the day I brought her home.

I was a little worried I wouldn't have enough space for all of them, but I just measured and their coop is 220 sq ft. I guess that means I'm still safe even if I get a few more. :)
