I am from WI, currently in KY. We have a disabled daughter who lives in a group home that SSI doesnt entirely cover. Amazing how far $771 goes. NOT. We got chickens to sell eggs to make up the gap.
We currently have 105 chickens, with the goal of 150-200. We have a brooder in the warm room that can accomidate up to 50 chicks. We have a grow out rook, aka Mini Coop, that was our original coop. We kept ducks in there a few years back. This spring we added the main coop along the whole backside of the original barn/shed. We have a decent sized run and approximately 3/4 acre pasture that I plant with chicken friendly crops snd herbs.
Most of our chickens are production birds; Golden Comets, RIR, New Hampshire Reds. But I am tickled by colored eggs, so I also have EE’s, a couple Olive Eggers, Some Cuckoo Marans (unfortunately, mine werent bred for dark eggs so I will be selling 3 of 4 of them. Keeping one because I want a broody and all 4 got broody at anout 6 mi old). I also have Well Summers and Dorkings which I would like to breed, just to keep some heritage and meat birds around. So far I am disappointed with my Dorkings. I lost over 30% of them. They just seemed to have/be failure to thrive. At ten weeks old, two of them are still the size of 4 week olds. I’m still intrigued enough with the breed that I will likely pursue some new stock from a different source.
We have a beutiful Aussie pup that we are still training to herd our chickens at night. He is very good, but even at a year old, is still very excitable. Just having him oee on the oroperty though, has kept predators to a minimum. Thanks Elliot.
