Hi, my name is Michele, Mhays is usually my forum name. I've been fascinated by quail for years, ever since discovering quail eggs in our local Chinatown. We live in a teeny-tiny attached townhouse right near the border of Chicago - about as urban as you can get in the suburbs. Obviously, we don't have much space, but my son has had a pile of Degus for about five years (they are adorable little relatives of Chincillas) and that hasn't been a problem. We had talked about using the Degu cage (a double Critter Nation) as a quail pen when they finally pass away (I think they've outlived their lifespan already.)
But now we have a scary potential Zombie Apocalypse situation, and while I can sneak all kinds of vegetables into my tiny garden patch, I'd like to have access to animal protein. (I don't really believe we will run into trouble, but I like the idea of being prepared to hunker down if Zombie hordes descend upon us) And we realized that if we have space for Degus, we've got space for a couple-three laying quails and their offspring. So why not? We're vacillating between adorable but inedible Button Quail or being entirely practical and getting Jumbos...but if we can find some African Harlequins, we're going to get those!
Still working on a habitat, incubator, brooder, etc...
