Hi, Urban dweller who'd love to be farmer-ish

Thank you for joining us at Backyard Chickens Michelle, you are very welcome here. Would love to see what degus look like. Do they bite? Always a first concern of mine.

Someone gave/dumped a guinea pig on me many years ago. No instructions or cage - just in a cardboard box with some lettuce in the bottom. When I went to feed it, it would bite my fingers. . It made shrill noises all day. Thankfully a neighbor with experience took it off my hands.
They are in the same family as guinea pigs and not that different - it's really a matter of getting them used to being handled. Ours will usually give a little warning nip before actually biting, although one of our three was a jerk and would bite without warning. They have sharp little teeth, you barely feel it, but they can draw blood nicely.

But they are total vegetarians and generally not bothered by much in the wild, so they're pretty calm. Ours will sit in your hand and eat a snack - they pick things up in their mouths, but they hold them with their hands, so if you give them a rolled oat they will eat it like it's a cookie. Very adorable.
