Welcome to the BYC flock. We are very glad you decided to join us.
I hope you are able to figure out if you can have chickens where you live. I was able to find ours by looking on our townships website. I hope you can do the same.
Thank you. I'm happy to meet you on BYC. My city allows up to 20 chickens or other fowl but no roosters in 3 zones. My only issue is that I'm in the city but on a county island or county annex and do not know what the county zones are or whether I should go by county or city. I also don't know which zone my parcel of land is on. I have a neighbor who has hens and a rooster , ponies, horses, dogs, turkeys and who knows what else. I assume that if it's ok for them, I could try and see if anyone tells me I can't. Fingers crossed![]()
I would assume that county ordinances would be more lenient than city ordinances, but that is just an assumption.
Who do you pay your property taxes to? If your zone is not clearly indicated on your bill, you should be able to call and at least find out what zone you are in and where you can get a copy of the ordinances.
Or, like you say, if your neighbor has all those animals, then hopefully you can too. I guess it is always easier to ask for forgiveness than permission, correct? Plus, it's not like that neighbor is going to complain when he is doing the same thing? The only problem is, you hate to spend a lot of time and money on chickens, a coop/run, feed, etc. if, at some point, you are forced to get rid of them because you are not zoned for them.
My how times have changed. From this...

To local government trying to limit what we can do on our own land:
Good luck! I will keep my fingers crossed for you too!
