Hi!

My name is Christy. My husband and I are very new to raising chickens and have found this website to be a valuable resource in doing so. We had been talking about raising chicks for quite a while and purchased our babies on March 30th, 2012. They were a day old and were just adorable. We had done quite a bit of research on line and had read several books on the subject. My husband also has a co-worker with a lot of experience raising chickens. He has been able to glean a lot of info from him while chatting at work. Anyway, we have 11 chicks: 5 silver laced wyandottes, 3 americaunas, 2 americauna bantams, and one golden seabright bantam.

My husband quickly designed and built a spacious and gorgeous coop for them. I am very proud of his coop! You can see pics here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/gallery/album/view/id/6226308/user_id/133143

We kept the babies contained in a huge rubbermaid container in our kitchen for the first week and a half or so. It was an under bed storage container and we made a covered wired roof for it, giving them a taller space. Next we used a large utility wagon to keep them in until they were grown enough to go into their outdoor coop. It stayed in our kitchen and on warm days, I would wheel them outside onto the deck. It was covered so they could not get out. But, I also stayed outdoors with them so predators could not get in.

It was a grand day when we were finally able to get them into their new coop. They had plenty of space and seem very happy in it. We are free ranging them in our backyard and we close them inside their coop every night. They are hilarious to watch. They parade out of the coop every morning as soon as we raise the door. Just before dusk, they all parade back inside like clockwork. They each seem to have their own personality and their antics bring a smile to our face most every day.

To all other new members here ...Welcome! This is a great community of folks!

One of the hens we purchased is crowing, lol! We are not allowed to have roosters where we live. Anyone have any suggestions? We've raised him since he was a day old and have had him for almost 3 months so he is more of a pet now. I'm stressed out to say the least. I feel like taking him back to the Rural King where we bought him (well, her at the time, lol).

Hello and welcome to BYC

Hi and :welcome

I love your pictures!! That's a nice coop you've done, and your chickens are very cute too. :p
As for your rooster, sorry she turned out to be a he! There isn't really much you can do if you're not allowed to have a roo. Do you have any friends who can take him? If not, there might be folks on BYC who wouldn't mind, who live near you.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have, and enjoy the site. :D

Oh, your coop and your chickens are beautiful. As far as the little roo...I am also new (three months in). Three of our original seven turned out to be roosters. I was absolutely broken hearted, as we raised them from eggs and were very attached. I contacted local farmers and petting zoos in my area. I found both who were willing to take them (no kill). I ended up bringing them to a farmer who swapped me for three pullets. It took a bit of research and phone calls...but there was a happy ending for all.

Good luck! So glad you joined!

Thank you for your prompt reply

. I like your idea about contacting local farmers and petting zoos. I am very willing to put the time into finding our roo a good home. I love your profile pic! The Ameraucana chicks are sooooo cute when they are little. I called ours "chipmunk chickens" because of the stripes, lol. We have 5 Ameraucanas altogether. The 2 Ameraucana bantams turned out to be pretty plain: brown, but still cute. The 3 regular sized ones each turned out to look different. One is mostly white with black. We named it Cruella (for Cruella DeVille) because of the coloring. That's the one that turned out to be a roo, lol. One turned out mostly orange and the other looks more of a dark reddish color.

As far as 3 of your 7 turning out to be roosters, OMG! How awful to have to get rid of almost half of the flock you raised from eggs/chicks

. That had to be very heartbreaking. I'm thrilled to hear that you are enjoying raising chickens in New York. I think it's amazing to actually hatch the eggs! It had to be incredible to watch! We purchased ours from the local farm store when they were just a day old.

I hope everything goes well for you and your chicks.

Thanks again for the info,

Christy

Hello there! Thank you for the welcome. I just looked at your Chickenstock information. I hope I can attend the next time you have one. Sounds like a great time.

To answer the question at the bottom of your reply: I don't think there's any such thing as too many chickens, lol!

Have a great day!

Christy
