Welcome!! I I spent many hours hovering in Reading before joining myself and I will tell you that I do not regret becoming part of this community! The people are friendly, knowledgeable, and there are such funny stories that bouncing around the app is a complete joy for me in the morning! I'm in Northern New York, brand new to raising chickens, have 5 pullets that are (3) are 7 weeks and (2) are 4 months old hens. My birds are in temporary quarters until we can finish the purchase of my husband's family home. Then we will be expanding to a very large coop and turning the existing coop into a Pullet coop/run for future babies. There are so many interesting articles to learn from that I tend to get lost in my app from time to time! My hubby thinks it's hilarious bc I will read something and pop up, run out to my coop to try the tips I read! I'mma Huge dork, I admit it!! Once afraid to even touch them (so fragile, didn't want to hurt them OR get my eyes pecked out for a mistake!), But after advice/tips, I'm not only touching them, the fear has subsided. Thanks to my Bertha (leghorn who picked me when buying hens from local farmer). She is an attention lover and already spoiled (how did THAT happen?)!! Anyway, I hope you find the same exceptional experiences that I have!Hi Y’all. Thank you for adding me.
I found BackYardChickens.com from a Google search, and I’ve been hovering for about 2 weeks now. After reading a few very interesting and informative posts I likes how folks aren’t rude or judgmental and are just kind country people, so I decided it was just time to join!
As I was growing up, we had 49 chickens and 1 very happy rooster, however I’m not assuming my folks knew everything, and I am assuming y’all can share a lot of new information with me through your experiences.
I don’t have any chickens at the moment, but we are about to convert a mini barn into a coop and add a fenced in yard for our chickens. We plan to buy from farmers we know, and only buy about 6 because I don’t want to over crowd them.
I love gardening, so I also plan to allow my chicken to eat larva and insects etc from time to time (when I’m with them as we have 2 very fearless cats).
As for hobbies, I enjoy Geocaching with husband and grand-kids. I’m always busy organizing some sort of lady’s group events. Currently, I just got approved by our town’s Parks Board (we have 4 parks), to organize and host a Pizza-Bake Off within our town. We have 16 different pizzerias! I do these types of things to help the community stay a community as its growing vastly, and help people interact outside their “circle of friends.” I enjoy watching it all come together and see people enjoy themselves.
