New chicken mama here! My sis has had chickens a long time and I’ve been wanting some for awhile. But I’m a truck driver and was on the road. Now that I’m home local I have the opportunity to take in a small flock that needs rehomed. We are setting up the coop and run currently before bringing the flock over. Any suggestions for a newbie?! Here’s our rooster and girls that are coming!

Welcome. It is very kind of you to take chickens that need to be rehomed. Go big with your coop and run. Don't buy a pre-fab coop, they always overstate the number of chickens they can house, they have poor ventilation and most you cannot walk in to. Either build or convert a shed. I converted a 17x8 shed, adding nesting boxes, ventilation and roosting bars. Space solves so many issues for both you and your chickens. Hardware cloth is your best friend. Hardware cloth your run, and put a hardware cloth apron around the run and the coop.

Thank you for your advice! We kept a large wood shipping crate from an airplane engine we delivered once. Makes an 8x8x10 building which we are doing a sloped roof on and a door. I worried about size and ventilation but the start up flock is a rooster and 3 hens and we plan to build an addition to it as the flock grows that we can close off for brooders and chicks. The run is actually going to be a double dog kennel (8x20) for now until we gather more supplies but plan on free range except at night where we will put them up. We will certainly get the hardware cloth to put around the run and make ventilation windows with it! With something this size how many chickens will it be comfortable for? Just needing ideas on how soon we need to add upgrades! Right now we are in job transitions and trying to use as much on hand as we can! We live on and help run a horse rescue so rescue is kinda our thing lol this herd is by no means in danger they are well loved but the family has geese that just had a baby goose and the geese are becoming quite mean to the chickens so we must build and move asap!
