(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I first raised chickens back in my hometown of Illinois in the 90's and then started raising them again about four years ago when I moved to Texas.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have about 50 fowl including 46 assorted breed chickens, one Black Spanish turkey (tom), and three adorable Chinese geese (2 girls and a boy).
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have Black and White Polish, Black Sumatra, Ameraucana, Barnevelder, one Jersey Giant Hen, Orpington, Rhode Island, Barred Rocks, Sex Links, Welsummer, Cornish, New Hampshire Red and a few game chickens not really sure what they are.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I googled a question about a chicken related subject and that is how I found this site.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Horseback riding, writing, playing, singing and recording music, working with horses.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything.
I am married to a wonderful man who encourages my hobbies. I have five wonderful children and one amazing grandchild.
We have three dogs, a (a German Shepherd, Presa Canario, and a Maltese/Pomeranian mix), two cats (a Maine Coon and a Maine Coon mix) , two parakeets, three Koi, many chickens (but our two favs which were our first hens Sweetie Belle and Lady whom were rescued from factory farmers so their beaks had been cut which is a horrible practice), geese (Betty, Wilma and Fred), a Black Spanish turkey named Tom Tom, an adorable mini donkey named Chucho, a Gypsy Vanner/Andalusian cross gelding, a buckskin paint Warmblood mare and an adopted wild mustang filly.
I am a singer/songwriter and also play guitar as a hobby. My favorite thing in the world is just saddling up my horse (or sometimes just jumping on bareback), and going riding with my horse Sundial. Sometimes on trails - other times just down the road and into town. I love and appreciate nature. I try to be as green as possible and recycle. I try to grow as much as my own food as possible and eat local and organic...mostly Paleo (for those who know what that is-it's eating like a caveman).
I totally free range all my chickens on my ten acres. They can go wherever they want whenever they want. At night they all come back to the chicken house, trees and coop on their own. I lose very few to predators between my mini donkey and my dogs (who actually used to be predators, but now guard the chickens when they are with them). We are raising about 20 hens for laying and currently have about ten that are laying. The rest are for food and a few are just roosters that are beautiful and sweet so we keep them around.
I own two businesses, a telecom consulting firm and my newest endeavor, Convergedata, a company that sells Shoretel VoIP phone systems, unified communications, network services, HP switches and servers, wireless optimization and enterprise mobility management (and a whole lot more).
This is a great site and it looks informative and fun. It's my pleasure to meet ya'll!
