Newbie here from South Louisiana. My family & I have not yet purchased any chickens, but we are seriously considering it. I feel like we (I) need to learn ALOT more before we do this. We have a 15 1/2 yr daughter who is active in FFA in high school and she is interested in raising the chickens for her Agriculture project. I am interested in fresh eggs and helping her have an interesting project that will carry her through the rest of her HS years. Not to mention that can then continue with our younger children. My husband is not for nor against this idea, as he raised chickens a long time ago and before we married and is an animal lover. Our younger children have NO IDEA we are even considering this (though my boys have mentioned it before). I dont want to excite them, then we decide its just not something we can do.

I am sure I will learn alot from you all. I purchased Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens: Care, Feeding, Facilities by Gail Damerow and Boy oh Boy do I have alot to to learn! lol

from Michigan! Chickens make great pets. They also earn their keep by producing eggs. Our kids are really enjoying ours and our 4 year old daughter has become quite the chicken wrangler! There is so much helpful information on here on how to care for chickens, what to do when they get sick/injured, there are people who can get you set up with your first flock members or hatching eggs.
