I'd like to get started raising chickens, I live rurally but I rent. My husband said we could build a coop on the patio?? I doubt his theory as I think chickens need ground... I could be wrong, I am here to learn and get started so I can stop buying eggs and start collecting them! :D

I do have a small area where I believe we could easily build a run, however it get mostly full sun throughout the day and I worry our chickens would cook, my friend who mentioned this page to me said "your chickens might die" which horrifies me! I don't wish to murder my chickens by being uneducated. I do live on the lake and we get breezes but it is still hot as HADES here.

Additionally I plan to build a patio garden using huge pots, three people said I could build raise beds on my patio? Wouldn't most plants need more than a 6 inch root system, especially since I want lots of variety? Sorry for being all over the place, I finally have the cost okay from the husband and I am excited to get started while the weather is nice :D

I can also measure out/post pictures of both areas if that helps y'all help me <3

I know in hot climates many people prefer an open sided coop (hardware cloth wire) with one solid coop wall. If you go to the "Where am I, where are you," forum you can post on your state thread and ask how people handle the heat.

! Great to have you in our community. Pleased you are entering the wonderful world of chickens!! I agree with drumstick about the open-sided coop. Is there shade and breeze available for them? This will be important in the Texas heat. Good luck and have fun!

if we built a small coop on the patio there would be adequate shade, however if we built on the side of the house there isn't any shade, I was thinking of maybe some tarp as cover over the top as well as a small box fan...

Some people use ready made coops but most of the ones I've seen are way over priced and won't hold up for years like homemade coops. Have you tried your local craigslist? I see coops on there for sale all the time for a much better deal.

I am really trying to convince aforementioned friend to build me one, the one he built is incredible. (and he called me after I started this thread, so he may be reading this) But he is a few hours away, so I am also trying to rope my father in law into helping... he however is such a naysayer and can't imagine why I'd want "nasty chickens" Craigslist is a great idea! I may even be able to pull off a barter that way too :D

I really like this one, but I worry about the location we live and predators being able to easily kill my chickens.
