This is our first year raising chickens, and we're really excited. Originally we planned to start with ten chicks, which then turned into 23, lol.
We've got 2 Rhode Island Reds, 3 Gold Laced Wyandottes, 3 Black Stars, 3 Sapphire Gems, a couple of bantams (surprise mix), and 10 Barred Plymouth Rocks.
I'm really looking forward to fresh, eggs, from my own chickens. I've been told the yolks are richer and more flavorful. I might eventually decide to raise meat birds later on, but for right now I'm sticking with laying hens.
I enjoy vegetable gardening, and this seems like a good way of increasing the amount of food we are producing for the family. Also, it's fun watching the chicks be their crazy selves, and all the different personalities they have. The kids love them, and that's a definite plus as well.
Little by little we are working on turning our 1-1/2 acre property into a small homestead. I planted some fruit trees, and muscadine grape vines last year, and started another garden for corn/green beans/potatoes this year. Next year, I think I would like to get one or two dairy goats for milk and cheese.
I'm looking forward to learning from y'all, and just hanging out, should be a fun time.
