Welcome to BYC. As long as the girls aren’t getting into poisonous plants, rodents or soil, it seems a necropsy is all that can answer the question. I do have one other suggestion. Check the food!! Is it moldy? Not truly organic?

What kind of plants in your gardens? Do you insecticide? I'm just asking because you're trying to figure out what killed your two hens. One way to know for sure is to have a necropsy done. If you lose another one, keep it refrigerated until you can send it in for a necropsy. We can help you figure that out in short order if the time comes. We only have two hens right now, so I"m not sure if that constitutes a flock or not.We give them
1. organic chicken pellets
2. a little scratch
3. meal worms from time to time
4. leftover fruit and veggies from time to time
5. oyster shells (they never eat them, though) and egg shells
6. we let them graze in our garden as well where they eat lots of plants and sometimes insects

No, you just keep it refrigerated until you can ship it. You would easily have a day or two.The vet I spoke with said that to do that, you have to get the chicken the day it dies, ice it, and fed ex it. Unfortunately in both cases it would have been a ton of work to do that and would probably have meant taking the day off from work, which is not very feasible for me.![]()
Here is a list of plants toxic to chickens - https://www.chickenkeepingsecrets.com/chicken-health/plants-that-are-toxic-to-chickens/Thanks. I don't use any insecticide. The pen where they mostly stay does't have very many plants. There is a rose tree, some grass, and a couple of trees and a bird of paradise plant. That's about it. My other garden, where I let them roam sometimes, has a lot of different plants but the second one that died died in the morning and I don't even remember if they'd been to the other garden the day before. But it's something to think about. Are there any plants that are toxic to chickens?
Thank you for this!!!Here is a list of plants toxic to chickens - https://www.chickenkeepingsecrets.com/chicken-health/plants-that-are-toxic-to-chickens/
Bird of Paradise is one. Not sure what kind of contact they would need to actually kill a bird. Worth exploring a bit.
You're welcome! I've decided it's worth looking these things up after I planted 250 asian lilies around the house only to find out they are poisonous to my cats. When I came across the info, quite by accident, my cats were laying in the shade of the lilies in full bloom!Thank you for this!!!
