So after a few years of lurking on here, I finally have my own chickens, and an excuse to join BYC :D

About a month ago I got 3 ~8 week old chickens from a good friend of mine. She had made a big order of chicks online (something about chicken math? :p) but since she already had quite a few decided to raise them and sell them a bit older. Worked out great for me, since I'm not really in a position to be raising chicks in a brooder, but have wanted a little flock of my own for the last few years. My stepson built our little coop and run as a part of his senior project, and we have a huge backyard, so they also get to roam around a few hours a day. I'm too nervous to let them out when I'm not out with them though, so I'm happy they've got some protected space when I can't be out that long.

Right now I have a light brahma, a black australorp, and an ameracauna (or EE?). I'm hoping they're all girls, but some behavior recently has made me a bit worried for two of the three, so I'll be starting a new thread shortly I guess, in the hopes the brilliant BYC hive mind can help me out :/

What else... I'm also a proud mama of a sweet little lab mix, two cats (one's my little snuggly man, the other is mean but really pretty :p), and am expecting my first human baby in less than a month now!

Welcome to BYC! We're glad to have you. This is THE place to get your chicken questions answered (or just to socialize) and there are plenty of great people on here to do it. Sounds like you have a nice little flock going. Make sure to snap a picture of the bird you're suspicious of. That'll make gender-guessing easiest. Your family sounds lovely. Congrats on your little one on the way! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Hi and welcome to BYC - glad that you have joined us and congrats on your new flock. You can post pics of your suspect cockerels on the breed / gender ID forum - https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this.

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre
https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center, and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you

All the best
