Glad you've joined us Very smart building your Coop before getting your chick/chickens Just remember we ALL get hit with Chicken Math, so make your Coop/Run as BIG as you possibly can. Better big than limited/sorry. More space the better, less flock issues & problems. Standard is 4sq ft per chicken in the Coop while it's 10sq ft in the Run. Pictures are the dues you pay
I know nothing about earthquake proofing but wanted to say Hi right back! Another option would be selecting predator aware stock so in case something goes bad the chicken can still free range and survive without you for a while. I would be considering self sufficient breeds with acute instincts for predators if that is your concern.
I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.
I see that Pork Pie mentioned the Topic of the Week articles which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. This one in particular may be of interest to you at this stage: Topic of the Week - Getting Started, Keeping Chickens
If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
