Hi guys, I’m Sutton from Indiana. My wife and I have had chickens for 3 or 4 years now, but I grew up around chickens, ducks, geese, and cattle, so I’m not entirely green. We currently have 25 hens, 2 roos, 5 pullets, and 2 (I think) cockerels. I need to cull about 5 hens and the 2 roosters. We have a variety of breeds. Our layers are a mix of ameracaunas, Black sexlinks, white leghorns, and ISA browns. My pullets are ameracaunas, welsummers, and a wheaten marans. We were tryin to add some dark brown. Our birds free range all day and then get locked in the henhouse every night. We go through maybe a dozen eggs a week and sell the rest to offset the expenses of keeping chickens. They pretty much pay for themselves.
My wife and I have three kids: a 4 year old son, 3 year old daughter, and a 10 month old son.
We live on a 45 acre homestead that my family purchased in 1855. Our house was built in 1864. Over the years it has stayed in the family.
My wife works weekends at her grandma’s shop that sells herbs, teas, essential oils, and other stuff of that nature. I work in the radio communications business.
Our only other livestock at this point is bees. My wife avoids the bees, but doesn’t mind them. My older two kids enjoy donning their bee suits and joining me at the hives. We’re up to 10 hives at this point and we’d like to keep growing.
