I have had chickens for about 3 years now! Honestly? I always hated chickens when I was in college because the broiler houses were so disgustingly smelly! LOL Now, we have 33 chickens with plans to add two more breeding groups. Right now we have a group of Ameracaunas, a group of OE, and a group of Wyandottes as far as breeding groups, but in our OE pen we also have light Brahmas, EE, Dream Pop, White Leghorn, a Speckled Sussex and some Cuckoo Marans. Though I think I will move the EE to the Ameracauna pen. I'd like to have breeding pens of Lakenvelders, Brabranters and Cream Legbars eventually. Not huge groups but I do like those breeds. I also really love my White Leghorns. I know they are plain and lay a plain egg, but it amazes me how a tiny bird can lay such big eggs!

We also raise registered Nubian goats. I have 16 does and 3 bucks. I am a sucker for their big beautiful ears! We milk to make soap, lotion, etc. I hope to make some cheese next year. My husband and kids enjoy the milk, I'm just not much of a milk drinker anyway. But they are a lot of fun. We plan to start showing next year. Our newest venture is raising rabbits. I'm excited to have another source of meat. We are hoping to add quail cages soon as well. I'm all about self sufficiency! On that note, I'd love to have hogs and a cow or two to raise pork and beef! As far as other money eating critters, we also have 5 horses. 3 QH and 2 Appies.

My husband works full time, though he helps a lot around our place. We lovingly call our little 32 acre slice a ranch, but its probably more of a farm or ranchette. We have 3 little helpers running around, ages 7, 4, and just about 2. And two rotten dogs and very spoiled outdoor cats.

First off... :welcome! I hope that you enjoy this site as much as the rest of us do! I have learned SOOO much from this site and I hope that you do too! Secondly, I love the diversity in your flock! :loveI love how you said you used to hate them and now you have 33...:lau
You should totally post some pics of your chickens, I think that we would all love to see them!:thumbsup

Good luck!

Welcome to BYC :frow You have some lovely chicken breeds and other animals and I like your future plans! If you're interested, BYC has a smaller sister forum, SufficientSelf.com, which focusses on self sufficiency and related topics, including goats, making dairy products, etc, etc… You're welcome to come join us there as well.
