Be sure the feed store you're getting chicks from is providing them with fresh water and plenty of feed. Look for the chicks that are active and running around. Also look for pasty butt (feces stuck on their bottoms). If it's just a little you can clean that off easily enough but if it's as bad as some I've seen (bottoms entirely covered) avoid them.

If you don't mind getting males, the straight run bins will include both sexes. But sometimes the sexed bins do too, so be prepared with a plan for extra males.
