I'm Tami (aka Snugls) and very new to BYC, as well as having our own backyard chickens. This spring we decided we wanted to raise our own chickens for eggs. This being our first experience, we started with only 4 chickies from our local Tractor Supply. We chose 2 Leghorns and 2 black Australorpes. There wasn't a good selection of breeds to choose from. Long story short, we just have 1 Australorp (Layla) left. She is about 7-8 months now. We built a medium size coup that's attached to a 10x8 kennel that can be opened to free-range into a huge enclosed area of our backyard. A week ago we added (2) 1 yo Golden Comets (Daisy & Red). They are quite fascinating to watch!! Yet, there's still so much I want/have to learn! I hope some day to have several different types of breeds to collect ALL of the different egg colors!

Welcome to BYC! There is plenty to learn here and lots of people to help you out with questions and problems. Leghorns and Australorps as well as the Golden Comets are all fine layers. Hope you have better luck with your girls going forward.

Hi Tami, welcome to BYC. I'm sorry you lost 3 of your first chicks - health issues, predators? There's lots of articles here to help. I hope things go well with the red comets. Those and australorps are good layers, you should have eggs soon!
