Hi

Hi Sammy Sam! Are you looking to start with chicks in the spring?

And welcome to BYC! :welcome
Hi, thanks. I was thinking Spring, but I might look at some chicks tomorrow. I’ve been busy building a homemade coop and it’s coming along great and it’ll be finished way before the chicks are ready to use it. The weather has been pretty nice here in Florida, so the temperatures have been great for building.

Hello. I must of missed your post, but I did answer this same question. lol. I’m still getting use to reading and replying. I was planning on Spring, but I’m going to look at chicks tomorrow.
Sorry, I must have missed the person who asked! 😅

Tomorrow is a perfect day for chicks. Enjoy!

EDIT: The person who asked is me. OMG, time to get off the internet for the night. 🤣

Welcome. This is my short summary:

  • Do not buy a pre-manufactured coop
  • Convert a shed or make your own - and make it big
  • Put ventilation in higher than where they roost and secure the holes with 1/2 inch hardware cloth
  • Make your coop and your run with a door you can walk into.
  • Space is very important - the more the better. Make your run big also and the walls 1/2 inch hardware cloth with an apron, and the ceiling solid or with 1/2 inch hardware cloth and covered in some of the run.
  • Get chicks that do well for your climate
