Hi everyone! I’m excited to be here. Figured I’d try my best to keep it short and sweet and answer the questions, lol.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Not exactly. Been around them my whole life. I first got chickens of my own about four years ago. My husband got me four pullets (about 12 weeks old when he brought them home) that quickly became one - my Betty - and she was my best little friend. When she passed away a year and a half ago, I was devastated and my hubby promised me all the baby chickens I wanted…. He was able to put me off last year, we were so so busy. Then he passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack in December. I hadn’t planned on getting chickens again until next spring, but while looking for a donkey for my nephew, I came across an ad for some chicks and in the photos, one of the chicks looked just like my Betty when I first got her…. And I HAD to have it. Have I ever raised baby chicks? No. Did I have anything I needed? No. A coop? No (Betty’s old one was destroyed in a storm which was another reason we held off last year). Did I hesitate at all or even try to think it through? No. I got that baby and its three hatch mates
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 40. Yes. You read that right and it’s not a typo…. Chicken math is real
I also have eight ducks, three geese, two turkeys, and a guinea fowl.
(3) What breeds do you have? I have Silkies, Golden Sebrights, Old English Bantams, Brahmas, Buff Orpingtons, Black Stars, Buckeyes, and Barred Rock.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? The chickens themselves. I love their personalities and antics. A lot of people talk about how stupid chickens are, and in some ways, maybe. They definitely do some absolutely stupid things. But in many ways, they are much smarter than many give them credit for. And I really love that about them. They are always surprising me. Eggs are just a bonus.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I love plants, doing most anything outdoors, and I’m a huge bookworm.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I’m a widow and my son is grown. So I’m now the crazy pet lady
I have five cats, a dog, and many other farm birds. The birds are the new addition. Chicken math turned to poultry math and now I have close to 60 birds in this mixed flock. It’s total chaos and I love every minute of it.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I had come across the website years ago, but when I started getting all the babies, and no hubby to ask this go around, I started researching and found the FB group. Joined that and find myself here on the website most every day, so I figured I might as well join
