Hi. I’m fairly new to chicken raising. I am starting my 2nd year with chickens. I currently have 20 hens, no roosters. I have a coop and a run for my girls and I live on 23 acres so they free range most days as well. I am always looking for new ideas for chickens raising and am looking forward to learning from this forum. I am currently thinking about raising chicks in the Fall. I’m in Central Michigan and wondering if anyone has done this? Thanks so much!

Welcome to The Forum! Lots of fun people in here. I do my chicks in the fall I want them on day one no later than the first week of October but I usually try to aim for Mid September I live in New Hampshire so it starts to snow and get below freezing right around Thanksgiving and stays that way straight through until the end of March with sub zero temps all of january and february. This past fall my chicks were from the first week of October and they went outside to the coop at the week before Thanksgiving daytime temperatures were in the low 40s night time temperatures were in the mid to low 30s and high 20s they were about 7 weeks old at this point and almost fully feathered and did perfectly fine. I did put a Cozy Coop radiant panel out there for them that they could huddle up to if they needed to get the chill off but they mostly cuddled up together for warmth inside the nesting boxes for their first month or so outside at night as long as there's no wind and rain and snow getting on them that works for my setup but obviously it depends on everybody's specific circumstances. I know most people do prefer to do chicks in the spring. But I've had success doing them in the fall. I would say count backwards 8 weeks from when you're really cold weather starts to hit and don't do any later than that
