That would be a "loaded" question as many opinions would weigh in.
However, just strictly speaking for egg production alone I'd have to say Leghorns for white eggs and Australorps/Rhode Island Reds for brown eggs. Leghorns routinely lay 300 eggs ayear and Australorps and Rhode Island Reds routinely lay 250-300 a year.

LOL. That depends on a lot of things. If you are talking strictly numbers, then you would go with one of the breeds that specialize in that. Leghorns and some of the hybrid crosses like red stars, sex links, etc that are sold by hatcheries do great. But they are usually kept with supplimental lighting and heat, so that they can maintain the egg laying rates that they achieve. With those high laying rates, they are soon worn out. They can't keep it up for more than a year or two.

The dual purpose breeds lay great and for a longer time, especially among the Heritage type dual purpose breeds. These were bred and developed for great egg laying from the hens and good meat from the cockerels. Among these are the Barred Rocks, Buckeyes, Rhode Island Reds, Dominiques, etc. I am partial to Dominiques. Their eggs aren't as large as the Barred rocks, but they are very good producers without extra heat and light in the winter. They don't molt all at once and stop laying completely during the molt. They keep on laying a medium0large brown egg. They don't eat as much either, so your costs are kept down. Dominiques are much more thrifty than most of the heavier dual purpose breeds.

I second the Barred Rocks and add in Marans. My two Barreds and my Birchen Marans lay an egg each every single day. They each miss a day every other week or so, but I don't use any artificial hear or light. Both lag very nicely sized eggs, too.
