New here, but been lurking for a while. New to the chicken world. Have 9 layers to get started. Really got started to get my 4 and 2 year olds interested, and so maybe they could show someday at 4H.

Bought a piece of crap coop from Chicken Saloon and in the process of "sturdying" the thing up. Probably will end up grabbing a plan off here and building a good one over time and burning my expensive piece of crap!

Sad to say a lot of prebuilt cute looking coops turn out to be just as you described. They tend to greatly overestimate the no. of birds it can hold. The materials are cheap and don't stand up to regular use and weather.

I bet the one you build will be one that can stand the test of time. Hope you will put up photos and description as you build - in the coops section.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Yes, lots of those small prebuilt coops are only good for firewood. LOL I started with one originally and found out quick it was awful. So I new bigger larger coop was in order!

Make yourself at home here and good luck with your coop!

Welcome to BYC. :yiipchick

Good luck with your poultry raising adventures, and I hope you find everything you need to know. Don't forget to take a look at BYC's very useful learning center (If you haven't already)! The learning center as well as the forum should answer your questions! There is always something new to learn! Glad to have you here! See you around with the flock.

I have Barred Rocks, RI Reds and Buff's. Three of each.

Thanks you all for the welcome. I have some food questions, but will try a search first before asking.

Thanks again,
Andy
