My name is Jim. My family and I are just getting into chickens since the city of Toledo, Oh just passed an ordnance allowing 6 chickens! So my 1st question. Cumfychickencoops.com has a warehouse near me. I can get a discount if i pick up direct. They only make like 5 models and I am racking my brain picking one. I will be getting 4 standard size chickens from a friend of mine when the coop is ready. He calls em heinz 57 chickens, lol. Anyway, i figured ya'll know a heck of a lot more than me at the moment. Take a look, which would you choose? Thanks!

Welcome to BYC, Jim. Glad you decided to join our flock. If you are going to buy one of their pre-fab coops, I would go with the biggest one they sell. Most pre-fab coops tend to be on the small side for more than 4 chickens and over-crowding can quickly lead to aggression, fighting, biting and feather plucking, and even cannibalism. You need a minimum of 4 sq. ft. of coop floor area per bird (not counting the area taken up by the nesting boxes) and 10 sq. ft. of ground area in the run (more is better). Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your coop and your flock.

Thanks:) If i looked at them correctly none of them had a 4'x4' living area. Not even their biggest one. I guess ill keep looking. I haven't had much luck finding a pre built one yet so the next step will be looking into building one. Looks like ive got more research to do, lol

You're welcome. That lack of space is one of the reasons that I've always built my own coops/runs.

There are so many builds and designs here. I think i can incorporate a few into mine. I will definitely start a build thread. Now i know that they need 4ft of space min per bird of living space. So 4x4 will work for 4 birds. I know ventilation is a must. The only other question i have before i start is there a standard dimension for a nesting box? I think thats the last one before i can start designing :)

That's ok, im reviewing several coop builds. Ill find it. This site is awesome. A wealth of information!

12" X 12" X 12" with a 9" X 9" opening is a perfect size nesting box for most standard breeds.
