As a first time owner, it is hard to go wrong with a small flock of Buff Orpington pullets or hens. They will give you about 1 egg a day (or every other day). Be sure to feed pullets the grower feed and when they start laying you can start cutting over to layer feed. Layer feed has 16% protein with complete vitamins and minerals. Personally I prefer M-G 20 for my layers (20% protein) even though I was swimming in eggs for a while.
