Hello, We found 30 eggs under their nesting box that we specifically boarded up and fenced. They apparently dug underneath and went to lay under their nesting boxes. How can we tell if the eggs are okay to eat? It hasn't gotten past the upper 40s in the last month.

Water test----put one in a container of water several inches deep---if it lays on the bottom or stays on the bottom it is good to eat. If it floats a little off the bottom, some will still eat it, But those go to my hogs. If you place it on the bottom and it pops to the surface faster than you can get your hand out the water-----gently get it far away before it explodes.

holy moly....you found a stash!
how many hens do you have?
did you not notice they were laying less in the nesting boxes?

When I found a stash like that, I broke each one in a small bowl before I used it. If it looked and smelled good I ate the egg. All 20 of them were good.
If the weather has been cool, you should be fine.

This^^^

The 'float em in water' test will only tell you if an egg is older, they lose(evaporate) water and gain air as they age and that is why they float.
It will not tell you if it is 'bad' or 'good'. Check each egg as @Ljc01 has described.

Aart, give me some scientific links or info on this. Myself and many friends and family use this method, and have never had a egg that stays down--in the water to be bad. If they float off the bottom---probably still not bad but I let the hogs eat them. So no---this method does not prove all that the hogs eat are bad---just the ones I am going to eat-- that stay on the bottom---I have never seen one of those bad.

No science.... just common sense and opening floating eggs that were edible, not 'bad' at all.

The floaters are probably edible, Like I said in my post---some still eat those---I did not say they were bad------- I just let my hogs have those, just like 3 week old eggs in the fridge are fed to the hogs---Because I got more eggs coming in every day and common sense tells me to share with the animals.
