I think you're right, the handle does coorespond to one listed on the http://stopforumspam.com database; admins can see if the IP or e-mail address also match.

Spammers now often register on forums, sit dormant for a while or post a few innocent posts to get established, and then spam. They can automate the entire process to hit a lot of forums all at once, it's pretty nasty. The goal is to get their links listed in Google, so they just need the spams to stay live for a few hours.
 
I've seen this one here before. The spammers target the New Member page at the moment. They are recognised by posts like this one, mentioning a company name, not as obvious as the movie spam infestation we had recently. Alan Zavachy and Harry Vested were our most determined "new members" so far!
