Hello! I'm new to BYC, though I've been a long-time reader.
If all things go well, we'll be starting a flock out on the (future) in-law's farm. We're mostly looking for dual purpose birds that have high egg production rates that compliment brahmas.
I will be taking responsibility for the majority of the flock, so I'm not budging on my idea of half of the flock(plus hopefully a rooster) being brahmas(most likely lights).
As such, I need a breed or two of high egg production hens to make up where they lack xD Unfortunately, most of the breeds I've looked at have reviews saying they're bullies or anti-social.
So what would breeds would you reccomend I put with my brahmas that are also high production layers?

I would recommend sex links hands down. They are excellent egg producers and are much calmer than a lot of other high production breeds. I have one that's a lap chicken. She's a red sex link, and is the hen in my avatar. You'll find them sold under the name sex links, but also under names such as stars, comets, etc, depending on where you are getting them.

I love white Leghorns, and it doesn't get much more high production than them. They're listed as a flighty breed, but all of mine have been pretty opposite of that description.

I love my Red Sex Links too. Lots of eggs, steady temperaments, and I've never had a problem with them not being friendly. My grandkids have been taking care of our chickens for a year now when we have to go out of town, since the kids were 8. If I didn't have birds I could trust completely, I'd never ask Katie and Evan to help with them. I also like my Cuckoo Marans. Again, solid, steady layers with calm personalities. But hands down my grandkids' favorites (and mine, to be honest) are my Easter Eggers. Love the blue and the green eggs, funny faces, and they have laid consistently. Even during the winter I got eggs from all three varieties of chickens. Of course, it was their first year, and they often lay better the first year or so, but I've still been very pleased.

Sexlinks, but they only produce well for a couple years, so keep that in mind.

Don't believe most the reviews about one breed being more or less aggressive than another.
It usually boils down to individual birds and/or their lineage...you can get a 'bad bird' in most breeds.

I note that you are looking for dual purpose breeds; try the Henderson's breed chart for ideas. So many choices! Leghorns and their crosses are excellent egg producers, but not meaty. How about Australorps? Consider getting some of several breeds, and see what you like. Easter Eggers or Ameracaunas for blue/green eggs, Black Copper Marans for chocolate eggs, Speckled Sussex for friendly, Wyandottes any color; the list is VERY long! Mary
