Molly has such a CUTE little face! So expressive! I love it!

Looks like she's lifting one eyebrow!

They are beautiful and good for you for wanting to keep the breed going on not mixing and matching. How many did you get as Molly is not the in the first picture. Thanks for letting us see them.

OMG, they are so beautiful!!! My DH refuses to even consider buying land where I can have anything like that. He says if we buy acreage, you will "fill it up!" I guess he is right, but what;s wrong with that? He is not an animal person and I am just the opposite, I love everything.

Right now we just have the four but will be getting another three soon. Molly will be traded because Victor is her sire. I'd love to keep her because she's such a sweety, but we knew when we bought the group that she'd be re-homed. I just finished brushing her out. She hadn't been brushed before, so it took some time to get her used to the idea. What a dollface. The heifer we are trading her for is also named Molly! She's black with gold'ish tips. It looks like she's had her hair highlighted. hehe

I feel so lucky that my husband is as much of an animal nut as I am! He's not much into the chickens, but whenever I need something built for them he's a champ.

Absolutely gorgeous animals. When I look at livestock like that, I am so sorry I wasted so much of my life working in an office.

Looks like you have a really nice set up for them! It's a lot of work isn't it? I admire your carpentry skills. Thanks for sharing about rare breeds. Congratulations!

I love those! They are very common in the North Yorkshire Moors where my wife comes from. My climate here in WA is milder so I'm able to get away with Angus, which are a bit larger and more popular for beef. But if I were living higher in the mountains, I certainly would have gotten Scottish Highland cattle for my flock.

Pawtraitart, is there a polled version? They look smallish in the pictures, how would they compare to an angus in size? They look like they could handle our cold Alberta winters. We are researching breeds right now, so far we are "steering" towards Dexters, because of their dual purpose. Do you have an opinion about Dexters? If ya do, please share it! All the info I can collect before we make our choice is what we want!

Thanks

Hi Omeletta. I have owned both while in alberta. Live in BC now, Kootenays . Have to say I would NEVER do dexters again. They are escape artists. No sense of where home is even after living there for months. They are high strung and very aggressive in comparison to the Highland. If you are hand milking the dexter is a little easier on the hands, but a harder cow to train.

All round the highland is a better choice in my opinion. The feed to milk output ratio is comperable as is the quality. The Highland is a much easier cow to contain and handle. Less calving issues and their meat is excellent quality if pasture fed and not overfed on grain.

The Dexters did a lot of fence and corral damage. They split 2 x 6 boards regularly.
